Project Overview
Multiple roof areas of the buildings of the Airway Heights Corrections Center, opened in 1992, were damaged, weathered and failing. Cortner Architectural Company was hired to help diagnose the problems and determine a recommended course of action based on the limited funding available for roof repairs. Over 360,000 sf of roof, covering 11 buildings at AHCC, were reviewed, categorized and prioritized by need. Data collection methods included forensic roof core sampling, moisture meter testing, thermal imaging, and extensive photography. The result was to repair or replace 48,000 sf of existing roof systems covering 26 separate roof areas over 9 buildings, including administration, program activities, kitchen/dining, education and offender housing.
Repairs included removing existing EPDM roof systems (e.g. membrane, insulation, substrate boards and vapor barrier) to the existing concrete and steel roof deck and rebuilding their systems. Improvements included replacing flashing systems, roof parapet copings and specialized items, such as vent flashings, equipment curbs and lightning protection grounding systems.
